Question

Editing with clips directly from Media Browser

Hi

I'm new to Premiere, having used Avid for many years. Sorry if this is a bit of a basic question but I can't find an answer on this forum or by googling so thought I'd ask.

Friends who have used Premiere for a long time have told me that its important to import my media so that it appears in the project panel, and then load it into the source monitor from there. However I see that it is possible to load a clip into the source window directly from the Media Browser, and then edit a clip into a sequence without ever actually importing the media. Friends who use Premiere tell me that I shouldn't do that and that it is import to import into the project window first, however no one seems to know why.

Does anyone know why this would be? What is the harm in just finding clips in the Media Browser and not bothering to import them?

thanks

As soon as you add that clip to a sequence, it's automatically imported anyway.

So whether you import first and then add to the sequence, or go straight from Media Browser to sequence, the media is being imported.

I think there is nothing wrong in opening the video files from media browser to source monitor and mark IN & OUT to use them in the sequence or timeline because the time you place the clip into the timeline, premiere pro automatically imports the clip in project panel.

Incase you just mark the IN & OUT in the clips opened in source monitor from media browser but won't use them in the timeline/sequence than the IN & OUT points will be lost once you close the premiere pro and reopen it, whereas if you import it via media browser and than mark IN & OUT point into the clips than it will be saved with the project.

Importing clips also helps you to organise clips into Bins or create a storyboard out of the clips into the project panel or to add metadata information I.E. labels, notes etc.

There can be many other reasons to import the clips into project via media browser instead of straight way using into the source monitor....

Because the best way of guaranteed import with all metadata correctly parked in the PrPro database is via importing by media browser.

You can also right click a blank spot in the Project panel, select "import", and that seems to do as well. Other methods get the media in, but can get more weirdities later on in the Project.
