Essential Graphics can't select to move or edit text

I am using the latest version of Premiere 22.5 on a PC.   I am unable to select the rectangle that I created and move it/edit it in any way.  I can use the transform info box to move/edit but I'm accustom to just working with the graphic in the Program window.  I'm also unable to edit text within my Essential Graphic. I usually click the Type tool and type inside the Program window but the text prompt never appears.  I've also tried clicking on "TEXT" to add text.  It will add the text but it won't let me edit it.

I might also add that I'm having issues with masking.  I can't seem to move a mask.  It simply won't let me select it.
