How do I export edited subtitles from Premiere? (Premiere Pro 14.9 and earlier)

Hello Premiere Experts,

I searched the internet but cannot find the answer to my question. Hope you can help me!

I am using Premiere Pro CC 2018 and edited a video interview with an imported srt-subtitle file. (So the srt-subtitle-file was made in advance for the raw, unedited footage, so that I could use it for better understanding when editing). I used it on the timeline with the raw footage, so whenever I cut the footage I also cut the subtitles ont the subtitle track and they stayed perfectly in sync. Now the edit is finished and I can export it with the subtitles burnt into the video. but what I actually want to do is export 1) the "blank" video, without subtitles and 2) export the new edited subtitles seperately, so I can then upload them to the "blank" video on youtube.

However, exporting subtitles as it's described in the Adobe-forums always gives me the same original, unedited srt-file - with all the stuff I already cut out and original time-code etc. Of course now I expect a new, shorter srt-file with a new time-code that fits the edit. Am I missing something?

I get the edited subtitles when exported.

Are you selecting the .srt in the project panel and then using File -> Export -> Captions?

Or selecting the timeline, File -> Export-> Media and setting Captions to sidecar?

Thanks for your answer! I cannot find any option to export a sidecar file from the timeline-Export. It only says Burn-in or none. Is that what you meant? Btw I am using a German version so I am not sure if I am translating it correctly.

the export from the project panel gives me the same file as it is.

Any idea where I went wrong?

Sorry; I was on another thread where they were using closed captions.

What specific dot version of PR? Operating system?

But I think this was working for me in any version.

Are you saving the .srt to a new name?

My workflow is import .srt. Add to timeline. Make edits. Select .srt in project panel. File -> Export -> Captions. Save as new name. Contents are different.

I have seen at least one other thread with this issue.

Yeah, if I follow your steps I always get the same srt-file as the original (saved under a new name).

I could post screenshots of each step but it would only be in german, but maybe that would help to see if I am overlooking something?

I was in 2018.1.2; also tried on another machine on 2018.1.1, then rolled it back to 2018.0.0. Same result in all 3.

Can you share your PR project file? That is where the edited captions reside. I'll send you an email address via PM in case there's any issue.

Or create a test project, add one short video, add the .srt, add one caption, save, and export. Same issue? Then share that prproj file.

lukasj and I corresponded about the specific files.

The exported file does show the changes in text, format, etc for changes in the caption stream.

I missed in the original post that the caption stream was cut along with the footage. PR sees this as a single "video" file, so the caption stream/file was still the original, and timecode changes could only be made relative to the caption file -  not to the timeline. PR does not appear to be able to handle this directly.

I suggested using Subtitle Edit or similar to reorder/change the timings to the final video.

I wonder if a workaround is to create duplicates of the caption stream for each cut section. Then export -> caption for all, and combine in subtitle edit or manually in notepad.

I'm just a little unsure about the problem you faced, nonetheless, I came by this thread when I was having troubles of my own:
I was cutting and reshuffling the imported SRT within PR, and then wanted to export this 'new' version, only, the export wouldn't include any of the changes.
Selecting the caption file in the Project panel, then exporting, didn't work.
Selecting the captions in the timeline, then exporting, didn't work.

What DID work was selecting the SEQUENCE in the project panel where the edited subtitles reside, and exporting captions via file>export.

The export captions via Sequence in Project Panel was a great find. I have just discovered that, with PR 2020, you can also export Open Captions (with changes in the timeline) via Sidecar file from Export -> Media. PR 2019, you must use the "select sequence in Project Panel" method.
