How to make a simple color change animation

I want the animation to be of an image and at the start this image is blacked out and as the animations progresses it becomes less dark until it is fully revieled

 

I am very confused about how to make this

Maybe apply a cross fade dissolve to the front of your video and stretch it to the right to make it last the length that you want the reveal to take (Time Wise.)
