How to turn a person into their own layer?

I want to be able to move myself into my own layer with a transparent backgroud, to replace the background with visual aid. I tried rotoscoping myself out in After Effects, but it's about 2 minutes long and would have taken forever to render out. Are there other, more efficent ways of doing this? Thanks.

Shoot on a green/blue screen and key it ?

I was shooting on location and wanted to transition from that location directly to the graphic, then go from that graphic back to that location
