I can't the Type tool anymore. Premiere interprets my input as commands

For reasons I don't understand, I can no longer use the Type tool to create graphics on my timeline. When I click the [T] tool and try to start to input text, Premiere instead starts interpreting the letters as commands, as in "input" and "output" and the hand tool and such. The screen flies about with different tasks being displayed as I type. What am I doing wrong and how can I regain control over creating title text images?

Thank you.
