Long-Term Premiere Pro Bugs/Issues Affecting Workflow

Participant ,

I've been experiencing the following long-term bugs in Premiere Pro that have been disrupting my workflow. Hoping the community and developers can take a look:

Playback Lag with Captions Panel (Windows)
When the Captions section within the Text panel is open (where text is highlighted as the video plays), it causes significant lag in playback and scrubbing. This slows down the timeline and makes it harder to edit.

When switching workspaces (WIndows, Mac)
(e.g., from Editing to Color or Audio), sequences randomly open or close, leading to inconsistencies across workspaces. It becomes unpredictable and hard to navigate through different setups, and having to re-open my sequences.

Window Resizing (Windows OS)

When Premiere is full screen on one or multiple monitors, switching workspaces causes any separated panels (e.g., Production panel, Project panel etc.) that were placed on a second screen and set to full screen to resize incorrectly. While the main Premiere window stays full screen, these detached panels shrink and require manual resizing each time.

Layer Lock Issue - Shift + Click (Windows, Mac)

When using Shift + Click to select and expose all layers with the eye icon, even locked layers become exposed. Since these layers are locked, they should remain unaffected by this.

Would appreciate any insights, fixes, or workarounds for these issues!

Layer Lock issue is not a bug, maybe file a feature request for that,

I reproduced it on Macbook Pro.

for your other issues, did you try to reset the preferences and update

your GPU for your Windows pcs to the latest working studio drivers if using NVidia?

For Mac, did you make sure you are using GPU acc. rather than Software Only or CPU?

Thanks for the clarification! I didn’t realize the Layer Lock issue wasn’t a bug.

As for the other issues, resetting preferences and updating GPU drivers didn’t fix anything. From what I’ve seen, a lot of people experience the same problems, when switching workspaces, sequences randomly open/close or get rearranged. Also, having the text panel open while playing captions causes significant timeline lag. And the resizing of panels/windows after switching workspaces doesn’t stay full screen. For me these are not huge issues, just something that slows me down in the long run, I'm also the type of editor to work with multible sequences open all the time, so for them to get opened and closed and in random order can be a bit frustrating.

Are you  working with saved custom workspaces? I've got nine, spread across four monitors ... and never have issues with changing from the expected panel group sizes when changing workspaces.

It IS annoying that frequently, changing workspaces closes one or more open sequences. Very ... annoying.

I use both saved custom and default workspaces while working with two monitors. The issue is that on my second monitor, the panel shrinks when chaning workspaces, forcing me to resize it. Meanwhile, my main monitor exits full-screen mode, but it doesn’t necessarily shrink. Hope that makes sense!

Premiere Pro workspaces dynamically update based on how many tabs are open in certain panels, such as the Timeline or Project panel. For example, if you had three Timeline tabs open in Workspace 1, then switched to Workspace 2 and opened two more, switching back to Workspace 1 will cause those extra tabs to close automatically.

To work around this behavior, you can:

  • Open the maximum number of tabs you expect to use (e.g., 10) in your Timeline panel.
  • Save the workspace with those tabs open by going to Window > Workspaces > Save as New Workspace or Save Changes to this Workspace.
  • Whenever you switch workspaces and notice tabs have closed, simply go to Window > Workspaces > Reset to Saved Layout (or press Shift + Alt/Option + 0) to restore the closed tabs.
