Mask clip with fade in - ghost frames in the wrong location

I made a video that features a masked overlaid clip that fades in.  Problem is, the fade is creating a short fade OUT of black in the WRONG place - the clip's position and scale are altered, but this ghost image is (I think) appearing where the clip would be if the position and scale were not altered.

Here's where it is after the clip is transitioned.

Here's the first frame of the Film Dissolve as RENDERED.  

Any fix?  Seems like a bug.  The clip extends before the entry point.
