Mask overlay black

I’m applying a mask to a clip to brighten a face. I have correctly  done the tracking to follow the face during a zoom, and I’ve brightened the face, but the area outside the mask, the one not affected by the adjustment, remains completely blacked out. There is no way to restore the normal view and display the clip in its entirety. Can anyone help me bring back the blacked-out area?

Are you using this on the clip, or an adjustment layer?

What feathering do you have on the mask?

I am guessing you applied an opacity mask.

that is fine but you need to add the same clip underneath the original without effect or mask.

Indeed, put that same main clip under the clip with mask, then you'll be seeing the main clip as it is and the face will be coming from the clip with mask.

To move your mask to the correct effect, follow these steps:

1. In the Effect Controls panel, find and select the mask under the Opacity section.
2. Press Ctrl + X (Windows) or Cmd + X (Mac) to cut the mask.
3. Select the Lumetri Color effect in the Effect Controls panel.
4. Press Ctrl + V (Windows) or Cmd + V (Mac) to paste the mask into the Lumetri effect.
