Misbehaving project, is it windows?

audio waveforms disappear or render incorrectly
thumbnails are greyed out, or slowly regenerate each time I enter a bin

I have done the usual practices to appease the premiere gods. Cache, plugins cache, reboot, restart, disabled plugins, created a new project and imported this one into it.  This just after spending a couple of days editing the same footage in another project with no issues.  In the meantime, bloody windows updated.

Anyone else having post updates problems?
this was the update:KB5029263

I'm on windows 11 22H2

Try resetting the preferences:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-premiere-pro/td-p/...

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/workspaces.html

If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.
