I'm starting a project in which some of the footage is in 30.00 fps and some at 29.97 fps. Will that cause any problems? Do I need to convert the footage to the same frame rate before I start editing?

yes. if one scene was filmed on 2 cameras at once at 30 and 29.97, then they will not match

It depends what you are doing with them, but mostly for basic projects you dont' need to, you can mix and match in PP.
