Multiple nested multicam sequences unexpected behavior

I don't know if this is a bug, or just user error:

I edited one multicam sequence ("Part 1" 3 angles.)

I added a brief exported mxf from a previous "episode" dragged from the project panel, that's being referenced like a flashback, to the first multicam sequence.

I edited a second multicam sequence on its own timeline (Part 2, also 3 angles)

When I add that second multicam (from the project panel) to the first plus the mxf file, the camera angle cuts in Part 2 are no longer discrete on the timeline. That is, that sequence displays the cuts on playback, but they are aren't selectable segments on the timeline, and the alternate angles that were in multicam view are gone, so multi view and program are the same image. Part 1 still displays and performs as expected.

Lots of variables I suspect so I'm not sure where to start.

edit: is this a source patching or track targeting issue? I'm ignorant about source patching for example, any tips for tutorials are also good.

I do need to retain the individual cuts for further fx work.

Alternatively, if I start with the second multicam, with its cuts intact, and try to add the first intact multicam to the front end of it, I can't even drag the first multi sequence from the project panel.

Your brilliant observations are welcomed.

And for the record I dared NOT consult an LLM. Learned my lesson yesterday 😉

It’s a bit difficult to visualize exactly what you’re describing—a screenshot would definitely help clarify the issue.

That said, if you're seeing the same image side-by-side in the Program Monitor while in Multi-Camera mode, it’s often related to track targeting.

Make sure that the track containing your multicam sequence is the only one targeted. This means the track target toggle (located to the right of the lock icon in the track header) should be enabled for that track.

Also, just to clarify: track targeting and source patching are two different things. Track targeting is on the right side of the track header, while source patching is on the left.

Thanks, Paul. First screen shot is the part 2 sequence on its own. Second shows it as added to the Part 1 sequence (plus "flashback" mxf.)

An additional note about the sequences: Part 1 had one unusable camera angle, so that track's visibility, in the expanded multicam source, was toggled off. Part two, all three angles are visible in the source. And to clarify, part 2 plays back as expected, but without discrete segments that can be further edited.

Finally, I may not be following best practices for a project like this. I'm not sure how to determine that except by asking here. Or, perhaps finding a consultant who could walk me through it. I'm happy to accept correction and suggestion.

Update: when I did a copy/paste of the sequence, instead of drag/drop from the project panel, it works as expected.

It sounds like you've nested the original sequence containing the multicam clips, rather than adding the individual clips themselves to the new sequence.

By default, when you drag a sequence into another sequence, Premiere Pro nests it—meaning it adds the entire sequence as a single clip rather than bringing in the individual media. To prevent this from happening, you can disable the Nest option. In the Timeline panel, look just below the timecode display and to the left of the Snap icon—click the Nest toggle to turn it off.

This ensures that when you drag content from one sequence to another, it brings in the individual clips instead of nesting the entire sequence.

Enable this button before you drag it to the timeline from the project window.
