My premiere pro starts lagging and crashing whenever I add/import more than one video

Community Beginner ,

Hi guys, I just encountered a really weird issue with my Premiere Pro.

I have been using Premiere Pro for a few years now. But I have not been using it in the last few months.

Yesterday I tried using it again but for some reason, whenever I added more than one video in the project, my premiere started lagging and crashing.

I could not move the video in the timeline, nor select any of the effects.

I have tried using different videos, but the same thing keeps happening.

When I only put one video in the project, everything is totally fine, eventho I put a large video file, it is still okay.

However, if I put, say, two small sized-30 second video, it crashes again.

I have tried reinstalling it, does not work. I even installed an older version (2020), but the same exact thing happens.

I do not thing the problem is in my hardware, because my RAM and GPU are more than enough to run it.

When I had only 8GB of RAM, I could use the 2020 version smoothly. But now this suddenly happens.

Please help me guys!

What are the complete computer specs, including hard drives (how many, what kind, what is on each, what capacity, and how full)?

If NVIDIA graphics, make sure to use the latest Studio Driver from NVIDIA (NOT the Game Driver).

Hi there. The spec of my PC is here:

AMD Ryzen 5 3500
Ram 8x2 (16 GB) Kingstone Fury Beast DDR 4 RGB Memory 3200 MT/sa

SSD :

240 GB Adata SU650 SATA 45.9GB free of 222 GB

500 GB Samsung 870 EVO 49.1 GB free of 465 GB

HDD:

SEAGATE Barracuda 2TB ST2000DM008 still around 1.5TB free

Mobo Asrcok B450M HDV
VGA Nvidia Gainward GTX 1650 4GB DDR6
(I use the gameready driver since I bought this PC and it has been working fine in the last 2 years)
PSU Aerocool 500 Watt LUX RGB 80+Bronze

I use ADobe premiere 2020. It has been working fine even before I upgraded my RAM. previously it was 4x2 (8GB) Crucial DDR4.

I do not think the problem is in the hardware because it has been working fine. I also use premiere to edit big videos to be posted  on youtube and it has been working smoothly before.

Delete the Media Cache and Media Cache files:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-clear-your-media-cache-in-30-seconds-in-premi...

If that doesn't work, try resetting the preferences:
https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro/faq-how-to-reset-trash-preferences-in-premiere-pro/td-p/...

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.
from here:
https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/using/workspaces.html

If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.

If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site. If NVIDIA, do a clean installation of the latest Studio Driver (NOT the Game Driver).

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.

What are the media properties?

Have you tried proxies?

I don't think the problem is with the media I tried to edit, because no matter what format or what size, as soon as I put 2 video files in the timeline/media library, it stops working.

Hi @Berlin32101582l9xa,

I read your note. Sounds odd. Can you show us a screenshot of the Timeline? Sorry for the hassle.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

Thank you for your response. This is an example:

Picture 1:  I put one mp4 video, 397MB in size. I could do anything I wanted. trim, cut, adding effect, and so on.

Picture 2: I added another video file, an MP4 file, only 23 MB in size, and suddenly everything went bad. Laggy, I could not play the video, the timeline is broken, I could not add effect, and so on.

I tried editing one video, 2GB in size, MP4 format and it was fine too. but as soon as I added another video, it went bad again. So the main problem is I could not add another video to the media library/timeline. If I only have one video, everything is fine.

Have you seen this kind of issue before?

I really appreciate any help you can provide.
