No audio when I plug or unplug my headphones

Community Beginner ,

Hello,

I have a really annoying problem when working in Premiere. I'm using version CC 2017 on Windows 10.

If I connect or disconnect my headphones while premiere is open, the sound suddenly stops playing. I can hear system sounds when I change the volume and sounds from other programs like Chrome, but Premiere gives me nothing.

Turning the program off and on solves the issue but it's a waste of time, especially when I want to test how something sounds from both speakers and headphones.

Does anyone else experience this issue?

I've looked in the Audio Hardware preference page and saw that I can change the default output without having to turn Premiere off.

Additionally, after checking again, the issue only occurred when I disconnected my headphones and not when I plugged them in. I saw that there is a pop-up message saying that I should check the audio hardware preferences. I've probably missed this message before since I've disconnected the headphones while in another program.

Anyway, changing the Default Output parame

Where are you plugging in the headphones?

I'm plugging them to the front headphones jack. The speakers are still connected to the back port but the computer automatically changes to only use the front.

Try plugging the headphones into the jack on the speakers instead.

Eff! Technology is grand and annoying. This helped me. I use to plug my headphones into my tower and had no issues in 2016 PP, going from headphones to unplugging and using the computer speakers. Now with these new updates, I have to plug my headphone into my speaker, headphone jack. WTF! Glad that was resolved

Hi ANiceShot,

Check your Preferences > Audio Hardware and give us a screen shot of what you see.

Thanks,
Kevin

Anyway, changing the Default Output parameter in Preferences -> Audio Hardware fixed the issue. Thanks for pointing out this preferences tab.

Kevin,

I have the latest version- CC 2017.  When I plug in the headphones, the computer recognizes it, but Adobe Premiere doesn't. The sound still plays through speakers, but not the headphones.  I see how you can go into EDIT=> PREFERENCES=> AUDIO HARDWARE and change the default. The problem with that is then is plays through the headphones only and not the speakers. You have to go back in EDIT and change everything back.  It has never done this before.  How can I fix it so when the headphones are plugged in, you hear through them and once you unplug the headphones, you should hear audio through the speakers??  Thanks, Tom

I too would like to know this. Since the last update, this feature was changed. I've cursed the computer screen for about an hour now. Please help. Going nuts here. Like Kevin said, why is this interface and audio like this now?

Here it is 2024 and my 2023 version of Premiere Pro does this exact same thing.  @Kevin-Monahan are you still active in this thread?

No. It's a very old thread, @gshooty. Sorry, if something similar is affecting you. If you can reliably reproduce the problem, free to file a bug here. I'll be happy to advocate for the problem. I apologize for the frustration.

Thanks,
Kevin
