Offline proxies are better than online proxies?

It seems so:

PPro 2018.1.2 on a weak laptop - built-in online proxy workflow results in red line timeline and choppy playback even with 1/4 reolution (made sure I used the proxies), but using old style offline proxy workflow with the same files results in yellow timeline and smooth playback even with full resolution.

The laptop has I3 CPU, 12GB ram, one SSD drive, no GPU card.

Original footage is H.264 in MP4 container, 1080P.

Proxies are DNxHD LB, 1080P.

What, exactly, is the "built-in online proxy workflow"?

Are you attempting to store your proxies you create in the cloud?

All files should be located on local storage.

"built-in online proxy workflow" is what's explained for example here:

http://adobemasters.net/proxy-edit-premiere-pro-cc-2018/http://adobemasters.net/proxy-edit-premiere-pro-cc-2018/

"old style offline proxy workflow" is just replacing the original files with corresponding proxy files and re-linking.

I've learned those terms from Ann Bens .

Personally, I've always had more luck with offline proxies.
