Performance Issues on M3 Max

I'm cutting a feature-length doc on Premiere Pro on an Apple M3 Max, 48GB Memory, and 8TB internal SS storage.

- The project timeline is 4k with many two-camera 6k interviews to allow for cropping. 

- I've allocated 42 GB of memory to Premiere Pro in the settings. 

- I have cleared the media cache 

- Playback is lightning fast even at full resolution. 

However, I'm having issues with poor performance and lagging when manipulating the timeline, especially after searching through clips using the Auto Transcriptions. 

For example: I’ll try to drag a clip in the timeline or move a clip already in the timeline and it is just not responsive at all—several second lag. I’ll get a pinwheel and eventually it will catch up and perform the action. Same lag on setting in/out and, basically, every function other than playback, which like I said, is very fast. It gets progressively worse until I close Premiere Pro and reopen the proj, which speeds everything up for a while but I’m doing this about every thirty minutes. Again, the problem seems exasperated when I’m searching through transcriptions. 

Anyone else have this issue? Any ideas on ways to optimize? I got the M3 Max so I wouldn’t have to create proxy files but I may have to resort to that soon.

@bryantheboyd Based on your description it sounds like you may be hitting a bug we're aware of in version 24.1.

It is fixed in 24.2 which is just starting to release today. If you don't see it in your Creative Cloud application as an update, check back again tomorrow or Thursday as it rolls out globally.

In the mean time you can install Premiere Pro (Beta) which is version 24.3 and also has the fix. Let me know if it's better for you in either 24.2 or Beta 24.3.

Any long-form work, or episodic, really should be in Premiere's Production mode. If you're not, that's also an issue for large single project file performance.

Thanks! I also found that if I close the text panel when I'm not using it runs better. The auto transcriptions are amazing and totally worth working around a temporary bug. Thanks for all the work you guys do. I'll be sure to check on the update.

My Apple iMac M3 is lagging as well. I don't think it has to do with the length of the feature film project, as I am trying to edit a 2-minute executive message for our internal news feed. Premiere Pro is struggling to play. 5-6 words of audio before it drops audio, freezes the playback, or gives a warning of "Audio not found at 00." I have downloaded Beta 24.3, as recommended by @mattchristensen, and the error still occurs. Playback in Beta is still not fluent and gets me only a few frames in before losing audio or video to freeze. I have a new Apple iMac M3 - Sonoma 14.2.1 with 24GB of Memory and 20 GB dedicated to Adobe. Yet, Premiere Pro is not able to allow consistent editing.

Yea, I've seen posts about this sort of thing. Some found they could get better playback by simply turning "default audio input" to "none", but that doesn't work for others.

Some have been able to turn off visibility for the Captions track, and get decent playback for other editing work. Some ... haven't.

Past that, who knows ...

@adrianga What you are describing is definitely a different issue and I wouldn't expect it to be fixed in the Beta. First of all, where is your media living? If it's on an external drive or server can you try copying it to your Desktop and relinking against that copy? That will rule out if there is some issue when Premiere Pro is trying to read the media from wherever it was.

My Media lives on my external SSD drive. I have moved the media over to my internal drive and it still does the same thing.
