Playback Freezes, has extreme lagback, and audio and video never line up.

I feel like this is a bit different than most playback issues. I'm in the latest version of PP (13.1.5) and when I try to playback my video, a few things will happen. 1. it will play for about 4-5 minutes before randomly freezing (not even the audio works) and then becoming completely unresponsive, eventually crashing the program. 2. it won't play at all even after a fresh restart of the program and my PC. 3. It will play, and like the first time it will play for a couple of minutes but this time the video will continuously jump back to the same spot over and over again, and it will play the same loop of video no matter where I am in the timeline, rendering it useless. I've tried changing the playback to 1/2 and 1/4, I've tried changing my playback engine to GPU accelerating, which makes it worse, and I've tried changing the audio hardware from MME to ASIO, and I've even downloaded the latest GPU driver with several PC restarts. I've researched for hours and found nothing helpful to my situation, to no avail. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated, thanks.

If you're using h.264/ mp4 files in premiere pro for editing then trying deselecting the option of "Enable hardware-accelerated decoding" from the Premiere pro preferences > Media. Refer to the screenshot.

If you're not working with h.264 then I would recommend trying preferences reset of premiere pro & deleting the media cache files as follow -

  • To reset preferences and plug-in cache at the same time, hold down Shift-Alt (Windows) or Shift-Option (Mac OS) while the application is starting. Release the Shift-Alt keys or Shift-Option key when the splash screen appears.
  • For Media Cache > open premiere pro blank project then go to Premiere pro preferences > Media Cache > delete unused or manually delete the media cache.

Sadly, none of these options seemed to have an effect on the project. I am uploading a video to youtube which showcases an example of the problems I am having, and will post the link shortly.

As per the Screen recording, the timeline in Premiere Pro is in red color which means you need to Render for the Preview by going to Main Menu > Sequence > Render In & Out.

Also, It is recommended to transcode the phone .mp4 (h.264 with variable frame rate) files to codecs i.e. GoPro CineForm or Apple ProRes using the Premiere Pro Ingest option.

This fixed the lag problem entirely, but the video still has lagback. This time however the lagback seems to always be in the same spot. Maybe this is because I didn't convert the phone footage?
