Playback stops working, video/audio can't scrub

Community Beginner ,

I've seen a number of similar posts throughout the years and I think I have now exhausted the troubleshooting tips I've unearthed here. The problem is intermittent and happens across all projects.  I'll be editing in the timeline when suddenly the playback buttons no longer respond from the keyboard, and the playback icon on the source and edit windows become a stop button.  No audio or video plays, though the playhead can be dragged without updating anything. Closing and relaunching the software buys me a few minutes of work before the trouble returns. Reboots might extend this slightly.

I have:

- Repeatedly deleted old/created all new preferences.

- Trashed media cache files

- Reset workspaces to saved (and with preference trashing, removed my saved custom layouts)

- Toggled between audio hardware

- Uninstalled and reinstalled (now on v23.6)

- Updated to Nvidia Studio Driver 536.99

My system is:

- Win 11

- Prem 23.6

-  i9-12900k, 128 GB

- Aja IO 4k connected via thunderbolt (so far, disconnecting it has not eliminated the problem)

If I've missed any obvious steps, I'm happy to try them!

Hello @hinkleberg,

Thanks for the note. It sounds like you're having performance issues. The community could use more info around this problem to troubleshoot more effectively.

  • Choose Help > System Compatibility Report. Anything pop up there?
  • Download the diagnostics tool. Does it turn up anything?
  • Does this issue occur only with certain footage, or with all footage?
  • Is the codec of the footage H.264 or HEVC? Or is the footage ProRes, DNxHR, or GoPro Cineform?
  • Is your footage being scaled? UHD > 4K. 4K > HD, etc.
  • Does the footage have a constant frame rate constant or a variable one?
  • Does the frame rate of the footage match the sequence settings frame rate?
  • Are any color space conversions happening between the footage and sequence settings?
  • Are any blending modes being used?
  • Are Adjustment Layers being used?
  • Are GPU accelerated effects and transitions applied?
  • Are audio effects being used?
  • Are third-party audio or video effects being used?
  • Are proxies being used?
  • Have you tried working with a single monitor setup?
  • Do you have any other GPU-hungry applications running simultaneously (Spotify, Chrome, etc.)?
  • Does the same issue occur in a new project?
  • Does the same issue occur in previous versions of Premiere Pro?
  • Does the issue occur in Premiere Pro Beta?

Thanks for any other info you can give. I hope we can help.
