I have been editing 4k footage on this computer for a couple years without issue. not the fastest in the world, but it has always been fine. Currently (i think since the update to premiere 2025), premiere has become so laggy that it's almost impossible to use.
I am currently editing a simple timeline- one video track with a few 4k clips, using proxies (default- prores 1080).
Every single time I do anything- make a cut, move a clip, move something into a bin or rename a clip or sequence, i have to wait 20 seconds, 30 seconds, sometimes over a minute, before the playhead will start moving again. the biggest delays seem to happen when moving something from one bin to another or renaming a clip / sequence. Then it's game over for a minute or longer.
I can still manipulate the other panels, click on a clip and make changes to the effects panel or whatever. I can continue moving things around in the bins. but the timeline will not play until after a significant delay.
This is, obviously, very frustrating. I am working on a deadline and this is killing me right now.
Can anyone suggest a change or setting or optimization that might help? I would be infinitely appreciative.
Update:
I have moved the project files and the proxies to the m.2 ssd, reattached the proxies, and for what it's worth, cleared the media cache. No change.
Update 2:
I don't know why this helped, but I just started completely over with my project. Scrapped the whole thing and am starting from scratch. Lost a couple days of work but now it's flying again. Not even using proxies. Incredible pain in the neck- and now I'm two days behind, but at least I can edit again.

You could have tried creating a new project and importing the old on into it.
