Premiere Pro 2025 Version 25.0.0 doesn't accept .mts files with sound?

Community Beginner ,
Dec 03, 2024 Dec 03, 2024

We just got a new PC with Premiere Pro 2025 Version 25.0.0 (Build 61).  When I import .mts files and drag them onto the timeline there is no audio track (on a known good file - checked in VLC).  We've got an older system with Version 24.6.1 (Build 2) that doesn't have any trouble with the same .mts file.   I was able to convert the file to .mp4 using VLC and edit the program successfully in 25.5.0, but that's time consuming.  Is there a way to get 25.0.0 to accept .mts files?

PC - Dell Precision 5860 Tower

OS - Windows 11 Pro for Workstations, Version 24H2

Basic steps - Import known good .mts file, drag from bin to timeline

Expected results - A video track AND an audio track

Its not a bug.

If you have a brand new W 11 installed, than that is correct: no sound.

W11 24H2 does not support ac3 anymore.

You will have to download or buy the ac3 codec and install it into Windows 11.

Right, it's imported as a video only clip (other symbol in the project panel), despite the described points.

I've also a video with the eac3 codec that wasn't working either but now does after the installation of the codec only the ac3 still won't import audio.

Got it! If i remeber correctly a file that one import without the ac3-codec won´t automagically add the audio once the ac3-codec is installed. Meaning that if you import the file and it comes in without audio and then save the project and close Pr > install the ac3-codec, the audio wont be there next time you open Pr.

So it is worth creating a brand new project and import some files to test if the audio is still missing. If it´s still missing, close Pr and re-launch while holding down the Shift-key. This will give you the Reset options dialog. Check the Clear media cahce files option and click on Continue. Now, open the empty brand new project and import files. If it still fails, repeat the abowe and check the Reset app preferences as well.

Any luck?

Just as I was writing. Thanks for your help anyway 😄

A full reset of the preferences would've been very annoying as it also would includes workspaces, I guess.

@Averdahl,

I see the same as @robubble. Works in VLC player and Beta (26.0.0.39); not in 25.6.2, including Media Browser -> Source Monitor.

System is Win11 Pro 25H2, updated from Win10 originally.

One search result suggests that there is no system location for the codec (even if installed), installed by a device or app. Is that true? And how does PR handle that. It seems odd to me that it works in Beta and not Release.

Doesn't VLC come with its own codecs anyway, even if it's not installed on Windows?

Did you also try deleting the Media Cashe?

The next step for me would've been resetting Premiere completely (all settings, everything).

The Beta writes completely new settings and doesn't take the ones from Premiere. This should explain that.

@robubble @Averdahl,

Yes, with every update I install, I reset preferences, clear cache, clear plugin loading cache, and create a new project. That's what I test from.

It is possible that I simply have not imported m2ts since forever; but ran across one today doing to drive cleanup, so gave it a go.

Yes, VLC brings its own codec.

@Stan Jones Have you cleared the Media Cahce in 25.6.2?

I have no clue where the codec is installed in Windows.

Hi Stan Jones,

Would you be able to share a download link for that sample MTS media, which is working in Beta but not in 25.6.2?

It will help us get it checked at our end.

Thank,

Sumeet

@Sumeet Kumar Choubey,

Today it works. I realized it was an .m2ts file (from a Bluray created long ago), and since I was in the Beta, I copied and renamed to .mts. Both files played in PR with audio.

So then I checked it in PR 24.6.5 - worked fine.

And then back to my 25.6.2 project. The .m2ts already in the project played with sound. ?? And the .mts also.

No idea what happened, but I'm certain it didn't work before. Perhaps codecs got registered being used in other programs.

I'll try to get you a link later today.

Stan

Update: Deleting the Media Cache (holding Shift while Premeire starts) did it.

So maybe the file was still cached?

Just to give my two cents regarding that issue:

Sure, the codec being dropped is tied to Windows but I'd like to see Premiere being more OS independent when it comes to codecs, without the need to install those codecs yourself first. There's also Influx by Autocroma that solves this problem but to be honest, in a NLE codecs should be the one thing, that works in any case.

I just wanna add that installing the codecs solved the issue for me, BUT only after openning PP while holding the shift key and choosing to clear the media cache files, like robubble suggested.
