Hi community, this is my first post so please be kind.
I have used Premiere for decades now. In 2020 I bought this iMac for editing a larger documentary project:
iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) OS Monterey 12.5
Processor 3.8 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i7
Memory 32 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
Graphics AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT 8 GB
My day job is editing on this thing. At first I was amazed at the speed and zero lag etc. As you editors out there will know, lag when trying to edit makes the job almost impossible because mostly checking smoothness of transitions.
Recently it's been lagging a lot. And frankly slowing my work down too much. What might be the cause?
Now, I've done some investigation myself and the CPU is not clogged, no viruses, no heavy load background programs. I have however had to buy quite a few LARGE external drives for footage. WD 18tb is the most recent one. Could this be a cause?
All my work is done from external drives so as to not clog the main drive. Scratch disks are also saved to externals.
Any advice welcome as this is unworkable and honestly spending £3.5k on another Mac after just 2 years with this one is not exactly ideal.
