Premiere Pro very slow performance with proxies

When I work with 4k footage, I like to create proxies. But since I'm on windows (was on Mac before), it's hard to work with.

I have to transcode mp4 to Quicktime everytime and it takes a ton of space. When I create prores or cineform proxies on my mp4 videos, the playback stutters A LOT. Sometimes the video doesn't play at all.

When I try editing with mp4 without proxies it's a nightmare. And I don't want to transcode everytime because when I have a lot of clips it takes too much space.

I don't know what to do to solve my problem..

Hello @Akai 2.2.5,

Thanks for the message. It’s been a long time since you filed this bug, and I apologize for the lack of a response. Are you still having this issue? If so, the team will need more information from you to reproduce the bug. Can you provide the information required here? How do I write a bug report?

I'll move your post to the Discussions board while we await your information.

Thanks,

Kevin

Hi @Kevin-Monahan , I still have this issue even on a brand new PC with an i9 Processor and a RTX 4080 Super (built 2 weeks ago). Even in a 1080p timeline so I let you imagine what happens with 4k footage.

To be honest, I'm trying to swith to Davinci, I'm tired of all these problems with Adobe Softwares, even if we report them we have to wait months sometimes years to have a response and most of the time, the solution is found by the community, not even Adobe. I don't know what I'm paying for.

I'll answer anyway, but I moved on, so many people have this problem and nobody did something, Adobe keep adding features that nobody wants instead of working on the stabilty of Premiere and the other apps.

  • Issue - Playback stutters when proxies enabled.
  • Adobe Premiere Pro version number: 24.3
  • Operating system - Windows 11
  • System Info: CPU, GPU, RAM, HD:
    • CPU : i9 12900 KS

    • GPU : RTX 4080 Super, Studio Driver 551.86

    • RAM : 128 Gb

    • Hard Drive :  4 Samsung Evo 870 SSD ( Total of 11 Tb)

  • Video format: Mp4
  • Workflow details: 2 video clips, and 2 audio clips, gaming video
  • Steps to reproduce - (Very important!) : Import the clips in the timeline, create Quicktime 1/4 resolution proxies from the bin, and attach the proxies manually when it's done because for whatever reason, Premiere doesn't do it itself, and after that, try to play it back.
  • Expected result - Having a smooth playback.
  • Actual result -  The speed of the playback is one frame every 3 seconds at best, which is not smooth at all.

Hello @Akai 2.2.5,

I read your response. Sounds unusual. You may want to work with our agents directly.(Monday to Friday, 7AM to 7PM).

To contact Adobe Customer Service, do the following:

  1. Make sure to sign in to your Adobe account. Allow popups and cookies on your browser. You may not be able to see the chat window if using a VPN.
  2. Click here: https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?rghtup=autoOpen. This will automatically open the chat window.
  3. Type "Agent" in the chat box to be connected to a live agent.
  4. When you get an agent, ask to be connected to the video queue. These are agents that are specially trained to handle issues related to digital video and audio.

Let us know if they can help you get back up and running. As for media generated by gaming streams, (regardless of your editing platform), transcoding that media may be a better idea than creating proxies. That has solved the issue for others. Try it as a test. Good luck.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi @Kevin-Monahan

I have no choice than transcode now, but the thing is, it takes a lot of space that's why I'm trying to avoid it when I can, because sometimes I have 400 Gb of Mp4 to transcode and doing this everytime is time and space consuming.

I don't count on the proxy workflow anymore, I don't get it, everything was fine in the 2022 version of Premiere but now, the more updates we have, the worse the software becomes.

But thanks for your answer and your help.
