Properties Panel when Editing captions is incredibly slow

Explorer ,
Apr 18, 2025 Apr 18, 2025

This is my first time using captions since the move away from Essential Graphics and this is so frustrating. Completely unacceptable from a "Pro" program. Apparently not an isolated issue, I've found others complain online. Does Adobe just not listen to people? Time and time again I see complaints of persistent problems with their products, going back years, without the problems being addressed and fixed. Quality of Life improvements go a long way for retention. Some video games will fix their problems within weeks and makes most people happy enough to keep using their product.

The Issue
So basically, I have every caption highlighted to edit them all at once. Everytime I try to make a change (move a slider) it doesn't actively move, there is a delay of several seconds while it makes the changes. It is not my hardware, and all my software is up to date. This is only a 16 minute clip. I assume what it's doing is populating and rendering the changes accross the whole clip at the same time rather than just what I'm currently viewing, which is uh stupid for lack of better terms. My timeline is paused. Why wouldn't it just focus on rendering the simple changes paused on my timeline rather than using all my resources to change everything all at once? I do not get how that can be conceived as the better option. I really just don't get how caption changes use so many resources to even cause this issue. It's text! It even happens when I turn stroke and shadows off. I mean how the heck was this properties panel even designed? Was it even properly tested before being forced on Premiere Pro 25?

Windows 11

CPU: 7700X

GPU: Nvidia 4060ti 16gb

RAM: 64gb TForce 6000 MHZ

RAM reserved for Premiere: 51 gb

I have deleted cache files. Set focus on timeline for insert/overwrite edits. Hardware acceleration is enabled.

@Blade283694466fq1,

Users have reported a variety of performance issues since the new caption workflow was introduced. Generally I could not replicate any of them except where it was a long sequence/many captions. Where old bugs were identified, they have been fixed. I have not tested for the latest problems, some of which appear Mac-related - I am PC.

In any event, I doubt current performance issues have anything to do with the Properties vs Essential Graphics panel. Some of them may be graphics driver-related.  I am not seeing such delays in smaller projects. But I report some tests below.

I am not doubting your slow performance. I am just at a loss as to its cause. What is your graphics driver version?

For workarounds, the better workflow is to select only one caption, make the changes, then create a caption track style. For a caption track (not regular graphics text), that style is then applied to every caption on the track. Applying it will probably show the delay, but in my tests it is no longer than it would take for each change with all captions selected.

My PC is i7 11700K 3.6GHz 8 Core 16MB, RAM 64.0 GB, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070, 8GB VRAM, Studio Driver 566.36 (newest is 576.02). I'm running Windows 10 Pro 22H2 OS build 19045.5737. I tested PR 2025.2.1.

I created a sequence that is almost 3 hours long (2:55:05:22) with almost 4,000 captions. I am using source media transcriptions, but it should not matter for actions related to captions.

If I select one caption and change something (position, font color), the change is instantaneous. Most changes have no "ok" button etc; the program is attempting to show immediately every change that is made. Even font color (which has the color picker on screen), the font color change appears as it is selected, you do not need to click okay.

If I now select all captions, and make a change, there is a delay of 3-4 seconds to see each change. This is very disruptive to work: as you describe, you must wait for each change to catch up before making another. Later I did additional testing to see if it made a difference if I was zoomed out to show the whole timeline or zoomed in to see only a few captions. It did not, nor did closing the Text panel. But in those tests, the delays were much longer - over 20 seconds - no idea why. Click on a new location on the font slider. It appears to do nothing; several seconds later, I see a spinning circle. Then a screen flash. Then nothing.  Then the spinning circle. Then the font marker appears on the slider. Anotehr screen flash. The font size changes. Sometimes, several seconds later, the font shows a second line. More often, the text box does not change and the excess text simply is no longer visible.

If I select only one caption to make all my changes, then define style (saved to project and locally - but I doubt it makes a difference). Once I click ok, it automatically applies it to all captions. That process took 3-4 seconds to apply to all.

I then created a 16 minute sequence with 361 captions, to approximate your sequence. Changing one caption is instantaneous. Changing all captions at once is not instantaneous, but under one second. And the same for creating style.

Hey Stan, I did similar little tests. I was using Studio Driver 572.83 (March), just updated to current 576.02 and tested a few things. There is actually a little bit of lag when even just changing the size of one, not really noticeable though. The lag really starts when grabbing a handful, but still not as bad as trying to change all the captions. I'll use the workaround going forward.

I'm really just baffled, because this was not an issue when changing text with the essential graphics panel. Is it maybe because properties is using another window? I have noticed Adobe products can be a bit buggy when multiple windows have to communicate and I don't know why that is.

Also I should note, I am working with 4k video, reframed to 9 x 16, with proxies on.

Noted.

I have now updated to 25.2.3. When I updated, I always reset preferences, clear cache, and create a new sequence. For this, I did open the long sequence project, and get the same results.

I also tested an in-between size sequence: 58:22 and 1300 captions. Significant delay, times faster that the long sequence, slower than shorter, as expected.
