Premiere pro has always prioritized video tracks over audio tracks when selecting gaps. Please switch it back. Here is a demonstration of what happenes when I move the playhead over a gap and spam D.

'spam D', is that supposed to mean press D? Cause you're very smooth with that in the timeline graphic, it looks like it's happening automatically. When I move the CTI over a gap, it is selecting the video. Try a new project, with new sequence. What version are you on? I'm on 23.4. Mac or PC?

Disable track targeting for A1, and it will select the video gap instead.
