Right click the caption track header -> Track settings.

 

There it is! Sorry I didn't remember it correctly. It applies to the entire caption track.

Unfortunately, the only wrench I could find just changed the appearance, i.e. stroke style and fill style.

 

It's these things. 

ligatures-typography-485e1c327ac04091abd2691104ead363.jpgI found a tick box in the general preferences/graphics, but it made no difference.
