Replace Footage sometimes failing for images

I work often with the Replace Footage function for images. Most of the time it works, but occasionally (and I can't figure out why) it will replace the image into a purple clip with danger lines, and the clip is unusable. If I have this image several times across the project it really screws it up and I have to do a bunch of manual work. Why does it happen and how do I avoid this?

While this does replace the files, it still erases my keyframes for effects. I'd rather keep doing what I was previously doing: Save before each Replace Footage attempt, and if it doesn't work properly, I reload the project and just replace the clips individually. At least I can still copy the keyframe data.

So this is something I should expect to happen randomly, and it is not that I am doing something wrong, or that I can avoid somehow?
