Slow Thumbnail Generation and less optimized/slower workflows on PC compared to Macbook Pro M1 Max

I've been using Premiere Pro for the longest time, and I have it on my PC and My Macbook. It seems that Adobe has optimized the new silicon chips for some Adobe products. Although my systems have very similar specs, my PC is so much slower in regard to workflow.

I've been in a dilemma to either sell my PC and get an additional fully spec'd Mac Studio, or buy the new 13900k as well as new ddr5 ram, however, from my research, it still seems that the 13900k is still slower in regards to decoding, live playback, playhead scrubbing, importing, and thumbnail generation. How is a 13900k + 3090 slower than a 10-core M1 MAX with the same amount of RAM?

Will Adobe optimize its products for Intel and AMD so they can keep up with Apple computers?

Here are my specs:

PC:

AMD 5900x

MSI GeForce 3090 Gaming X Trio

64 GB of 3600mHz RAM

2 TB of Samsung 970 SSD

Mac:

M1 Max

64 GB of RAM

2 TB SSD

Hi DiAYEgoo,

Sorry for the disparity in performance. I edit on weekends, so I hope I can help you. I would first recommend trashing preferences and deleting media cache files. You can get to that option in Preferences > Media Cache. Be sure to close all your projects so you can delete the current cache, too - as that's usually the problematic stuff. This might help with your thumbnails loading too slowly.

Your AMD system is excellent, but the media you use with it might not be optimal. I assume you edit with native H.264 files? The AMD rig is not optimized for H.264; it's suited for editing codecs. So, you may want to create ProRes transcodes or make ProRes Proxy proxies with your setup. What's cool is that you can do so in the background to get editing immediately.

Your GPU should provide encoding and decoding for H.264 files. Ensure you are using studio drivers, not game-ready drivers. An Intel CPU/iGPU, in combination with a discrete NVIDIA GPU, is the one to have for a native H.264 workflow, especially the most current ones. More power, baby!

The AMD CPU you are running does not have the benefit of Quick Sync, so that compounds the performance issue, depending on the files you edit with.

The new ARM Macs are simply mighty. I'm not surprised you see it outrunning your AMD rig. Still, it's nice to have both! I have an Intel 11th gen/NVIDIA rig that flies nicely with H.264 and HEVC files. I also have a 1st gen M1 MacBook Pro and a 2017 MacBook Pro that are still working fine.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi @DiAYEgoo ,

Sorry for the problem. We have added GPU support for thumbnails in the latest beta builds, and we believe thumbnails generation should be quicker and more efficient now.

Please check out the latest beta build version from the creative cloud and let us know how it goes there.

You can download the latest Beta builds from Creative Cloud --> Beta apps
