Strange Display of a Transition on a masked overlayed clip

Hi,

 

Can anyone tell me why the transition I added to a masked clip, that was overlayed on top of a different video track, should display like this as it plays.  I got this wierd transition throughout my entire set of videos when I did overlays.

 

Such a shame.  Can anyone tell me what I did wrong by adding a fade in on the overlayed clip.
