Subtitles don't appear on video during elaboration

Hi,

I just started using Premiere Pro. I just need to subtitle a 15 min video. I've only done one before, but that time I imported the Subtitle track already ready from Subtitle Workshop.

Anyway, the problem is that I have created the project, and I see the video but NOT my subtitles on it. The subtitles element is aligned with V2, the video element with V1, the audio element with A1.

I have created one subtitle. And yet when I start the video, it doesn't show up on the screen.

I don't know if this has anything to do with anything,  but when I created the subtitle element it didn't ask me to set the pixel size. I see in the properties it's 0.9091. Also, for some reason the subtitle element on the timeline only has a 3-min duration, while my video file is 15 min. But it automatically was created that way. I would have thought that my subtitle element bar would be the same length...

If anybody can help me work out this kink so I can get going I would much appreciate it!

Thanks,

Alicia

Are you planning to burn the captions into the video? Or are you exporting a sidecar file?

You should not accept the defaults when you create a caption stream. The default is often Closed Caption 608, and you are more likely to want Open Captions. Most times when you select Open Caption, it will match the last sequence you created for pixel size, par, and timecode.

So check that first. If you used the wrong settings, right click on the caption stream in the Project Panel, and Modify -> Captions and change there.

And yes, it will be short. You must drag it out in the timeline.

Lots of gotchas here...

Hi Stan!

Thank you for answering my message.

Yes, I am going to burn the captions into the video, that's the goal of
this whole assignment. I did not choose Closed Cap 608, but had already
changed it to Open Captions.

As for the length of the subtitle element (the purple bar) on the timeline,
I have tried repeatedly to stretch it out, but it's impossible!

If there is any way you could give me a hand over Skype, I would be willing
to pay you for your time. I've got to fix this and get on with this
assignment before Monday. I bet it's just some small oversight.

Best,

This is what you should see. Select the caption stream in the timeline. Then hover over the right end, toward the top. You see the red arrow bracket.

Step 02 Crop.png

When you click, you should see the stream end turn red.

Step 03 Crop.png

Hold the mouse button down and drag right.
