Timeline disappears when I click on Effects

Regarding Adobe Premier Pro v 14.0:
When I click on the Effects to add something like a video transition, the timeline dissapears, making it impossible for me to drag the feature.  This also happens when I click on the Colour tab, but I can adjust via effect controls (though not ideal for me). I read in a "solved" forum question that the person went to Geeksquad. They said there is a little icon inside the icon for the video in assembly that can be clicked to select "show hidden". I can't find this anywhere and it's impossible to continue editing with this problem. Try resetting the preferences:

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Workspaces:
Reset a workspace
Reset the current workspace to return to its original, saved layout of panels.
1. Do one of the following:
• Click the Workspace menu icon and select Reset to Saved Layout.
• Choose Window > Workspace > Reset to Saved Layout.

Do not count on Windows to be fully up to date when it comes to device drivers
Go to the vendor site to be sure you have an updated driver for your graphic adapter
•nVidia Driver Downloads http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
•ATI Driver https://www.amd.com/en/support
There are also intermittent reports that the newest driver is not always the best driver due to driver bugs or compatibility issues, so you MAY need to try an earlier driver version

If that doesn't work, try Preferences > Audio Hardware and set Input to None.

If that doesn’t work, try updating or rolling back your graphics driver directly from the video card manufacturer’s site.

If that doesn't work, try creating a new project and import the old one into it.
