Pretty sure I had the same issue with Premiere on Windows. I think I fixed it by changing the default audio input to No Input. See this article linked for more about it. It does not seem intuitive that the audio input would affect the playback.

All my videos are in mp4 format. All previous videos are in the same format and there were no problems with them.
