Weird Problem With Pro Res Files

Community Beginner ,

Hey everyone,

First time posting here. Having a really weird issue with Premeire where I'm attempting to edit footage, and adobe premeire will freeze up and crash. Sometimes it crashes my entire computer, and sometimes just the program.

The footage in question was shot on a RED Komodo in ProRes.

My computer is a recently built rig consisting of
Intel Core i9-14900k

64gb DDR5 RAM

RTX4090 Founders Edition

Windows 11 64-bit

I'm having trouble finding anyone with a similar issue. I've never had trouble with RED footage on my computer before. Footage seems to work fine on other editing software, but obviously Adobe Premeire is my preference.

The only thing that comes to mind would be that the SSD that was sent to me with the footage on it was on a computer using windows 10. But i've moved the footage off the SSD onto one of my drives. Really stumped here when it comes to what's going on. Seeing if anyone has had a similar issue before.

Can you please tell me a bit more about what you're doing at the time of the freeze/crash? Is it importing ok but then crashes later or do you sometimes crash on import? I know of at least one issue where another OS can create extended attribute files for your media that will sometimes crash on import, but if you're editing that wouldn't be the cause.

hey Tom, during the freeze / crash I'm previewing footage in the timeline after dropping the footage in the timeline from the source monitor. I have sent a few error reports to adobe now with the DMP file included.

the creative cloud diagnostic reccomeneded that I update my graphics card driver, but that's already done. It also reccomended that I update adobe pemeire to the latest version, which again is already done as well. That seemed a little weird. Especially because it was sending me to the Intel website for their graphics card drivers instead of NVIDIA. Not sure if that helps but I'd really like to figure this out as soon as possible 😞

Okay another update. Now Premeire is crashing with any preview of these type of files. Not just the ones described.

Thank you for the additional information. I'm not sure why they would be crashing yet but let's see if we can get some more detail. Would you be able to message me your email address that you use with your Adobe account? From there I should be able to look up the crash reports you submitted and see if they tell us what is going on. If not, we can troubleshoot a bit more.

Can you clarify that a bit more: Is it crashing with all ProRes or all files regardless of what format they are?

hey Tom, figured out the issue. Wanted to post here for anyone having similar issues.

My CPU was failing. That was the issue. I've now run the files in premeire with no issues.

Apparently, 14th gen Intel i9 14900ks have been known to fail. The shop that built my PC said they've seen three other systems fail because of these processors. My fault for wanting the latest and greatest for video editing.

Anyway, the fix was to switch to a 13th gen i9. Hope that helps everyone who's having similar issues.

Thanks for circling back and letting us know what the issue was. I'm sorry that it was your CPU, but glad you have a solution.
