Why does essential graphics align with multiple clicks?

When I have a layer in the essential graphics panel that I want to center I usually click the respective align icon and it snaps to that spot. It seems I am doing somthing that is causing the align buttons to take multiple clicks to get to their respective alignments. I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen or not, but if it is, what is the purpose? If it is not, do you know how to fix it? Thank you for your time.
