Whenever I add a keyframe to the "Write-on" effect the rendering of what I'm making slows to a crawl and I can't get anything done. Does anyone have any tips/help, please?

You may want to read up on the basics:

Not everything is realtime in AE and you may simply need to use RAM previews. If you think that something else is wrong you have to provide proper info about your system, your project, preview settings and all that stuff.

I should've specified, this is a problem in Premiere Pro, not After Effects.
I also should've mentioned it's not just the act of adding a keyframe, it's moving the "Brush position" as well.
If you could help with that it'd be much appreciated, thank you!

OOPS, I'M SILLY.
I didn't realize this was the AE forum.
Sorry!

Not a problem. I'll move the thread to the Premiere Pro community.
Also, do you mind sharing the details of the footage (frame size, format/codec) you're working with and your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS version)?
We're here to help, just need more info.
Thanks,
Nishu
