Captions/Transcription Errors.

Explorer ,

In typical week I deal with five to 10 (finished) hours' worth of programming by scientific and medical professionals. It is filled with strange words and acronyms. When I provide captions and transcripts, the MUST be accurate!

I consistently find myself always making certain corrections. Below are observations/suggestions for refinement to Premiere that could save me many hours each week.

First, internal transcription is awful. Considering licensing “Whisper 2” AI transcription module. (As I use it through a Mac app called Jojo, its FREE.) As is, EVERY video I do gets run through it for FAR more accurate transcriptions than Premiere provides. In a one-hour program Premiere can give literally hundreds of errors, compared to one ot two using Whisper.

Then after I get a good transcription, Premiere mangles it while creating captions. Here are things I’ve frequently seen [NOTE "/" indicates a lne or bubble break]:

  • Tiny “bubbles…” (caption cels?)  I get a lot of 1- 2- and 3-word "bubbles" (caption cells?) from Premiere. Nearly all have to be changed.
  • There are frequently bad breaks… between bubbles or across lines inside a bubble. Group concepts and the word that specifies/modifies it. There should be no break between adverb and its verb; pronoun and its noun, etc.
  • Bad examples:
    • Red/car, After/Effects, health/care, congressional/hearing, etc.

Here are a few common to my work:

As generated

As repaired

The Abbott / Nutrition Health
Institute presents the Global Malnutrition Composite [TITLE IS BROKEN INTO PARTS, EVEN THOUGH ITS CLEAR FROM SPEAKER EMPHASIS THESE BELONG TOGETHER]

[SET TITLE APART FROM SPONSOR, GROUP TITLE AND SUBTITLE]

As Dr. / Chavez said, …

As. Dr. Chavez said, …

A period followed by space in transcript forces a WRONG break in caption bubbles:

  • Ms./Coltman
  • Dr./Williams

These always need to be fixed to be:

  • /Ms. Coltman
  • /Dr. Williams

Connected phrases should be grouped together, both across 2 bubbles and as two lines in single bubble:

    • NOT Catch /up growth BUT Catch-up growth
    • NOT E. /Coli bacteria BUT /E. Coli bacteria
    • NOT Dr. /Smith BUT /Dr Smith
    • NOT 20/years BUT /20 years
    • NOT Global/Malnutrition Composite Score, BUT /Global Malnutrition Composite Score
    • NOT relative/to BUT relative to/
    • NOT Joint/Commission standard BUT /Joint Commission standard
    • NOT …intra-/and extracellular water BUT  …/intra- and extracellular water

An auto-generated double dash (usually for a self-correction) forces:

  • an incorrect line break in transcript
  • AND an odd character
  • AND break in captions: Looks like this:
    • "He's having-[BREAK] - like he's spitting up frequently

These always need to be fixed in both caption and transcript to look like this:

  • He's having-- like, he's spitting up frequently

And while I'm here, why can I not make the Premiere default caption style someting better?!  For readability, I ALWAYS have to change to San Serif [Arial], on 90% gray background with 20 x 20 expanded edges and no shadow. There doesn't seem to be a way to make this a style that saves for all projects.

Thanks for wading thru this list. I hope some fixes/improvements can be adopted.

@Bruce306x0,

Your suggestions are not just customization, but upvote the feature requests suggesting customization:

Your examples, and patterns of transcription error, are useful to the programmers.

True: there is no way to set a default style for captions. The next best thing is a style that is available to all projects. You may know this already: Create a Track Style and be sure to save it as a Local style as well as Save to Project. In a new project, open the style browser; make sure Local Styles is checked, not just Open Projects (or neither checked is treated as both);  right-click your default style, and Set as Track Style. Pet peeve: I don't see a way to access the style browser until you have at least one text instance. You can create a project template with the style already included.
