Feature Request: "Extend Previous/Next Edit to Playhead" - but applies to Caption Track

How will the idea help your workflow?

Adding keyboard shortcuts for "Extending Previous Edit to Playhead" & "Extending Next Edit to Playhead" have changed my edit game in terms of speed. Would love to see this capability extended to Captions in the Caption Track.

Currently, they don't work even though the Caption Track is Targeted. Maybe a bug, but gonna request as a Feature I'd like to see implemented.

I do a lot of captioning so not having to toggle tools saves me a lot of time spent elsewhere.

The above is one example of a larger design issue.

Currently, there are a number of ways that caption tracks work differently from other tracks in terms of interface, with no apparent logic as to the distinctions. It's left to the user to experiment and discover how caption tracks are different.

Edit: having said that, have you tried the "extend selected edit to playhead" shortcut (default shortcut E, I believe)? Does this do what you want (almost)?

@Remote Index , mad props to the username - thought you were a straight-up bot for a while.

Agreed, but Adobe's captioning workflow & functionality has grown tremendously from the trainwreck it used to be.

I did, no luck though. "Cut" keyboard shortcut is only one I found that works & there aren't many assignable shortcuts for manipulating Caption Track. Function prob can't be mapped to the same shortcut as clips in a Sequence, but I wouldn't mind any at this point.

Hello JonJackson500,

I did, no luck though. "Cut" keyboard shortcut is only one I found that works ...

That's odd. I am regularly using the "extend selected edit to playhead" (shortcut E) on a caption track (subtitles). PPro 23.2.0 on a mac.

Hopefully there will be some additional responses ... perhaps this should be reported as a bug?

Agreed. It's a shame they are not interested in documenting, communicating, and maintaining their work. (link)

Hmmm... my Caption Track settings are set to 708. Left office for the day, but will try using the "selected edit to playhead" shortcut after changing Caption Track settings to Subtitles (FWIW, I'm on Windows 11)

@Remote Index,

Thanks for that. When I tested earlier today, it did not work. With your comment, I persisted and it works. When it works, either the shortcut E or Sequence -> Extend selected edit ..... work.

I tested track targeting and whether the caption segment was selected or not. Does not matter.  BUT, it must be an "edit" to work. With the selection tool, click the end of the segment. It marks it red as an edit point. Now the command works. The command also works with the playhead before the segment and the beginning of the segment marked.

Shortcuts to move the edit point do NOT work in the caption track. The regular timeline command (up arrow/down arrow) works with track targeting and without selecting the segment. The special caption shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+Up/down) work only without targeting, and do select. But unlike the regular action in the video tracks of the timeline, neither of these commands move the edit point. So these only work in the caption track with mouse selection of the edit point.

Stan

I'm so glad to find your forum, I need this feature a lot, I know we can basically use 'E' shortcut to extend the previous caption to the playhead, but it only works IF we SELECT the edit point of the caption first, AND there is a space between both the captions, that is 3-4 steps and isn't useful, it should work just like it does in the active clips of our timeline. Is there any update on this feature? Please add this ASAP. Thanks.
