Restore MKV Format Support

Removing MKV Format support has a negative impact on the workflow of people that work with broadcasting software like OBS. Restore MKV support. Having native support for MKVs, even if they don't edit well without generating proxies, saves me a ton of time that I'd otherwise have to spend remuxing/transcoding files.

Hi all,

MKV support is actively being worked on. I don't have a release date to share currently but when that changes, I will update this message.

Regards,

Fergus

I have some projects using ".mkv" and now it's a headache having to search for a workaround 😞
Please get the ".mkv" officially supported, it is critical to some of us that can't take the time to remuxing files!
Please!

I sure hope Adobe had compelling technical reasons for removing MKV support, and that your lawyers didn't have any say in the matter.

This is honestly crazy. I had many CURRENT projects that use mkv files and now i have to go and convert them because some num-nuts at adobe decided to take it out..!

ANY amount of warning would be nice.

I honestly don't understand why an 'update' would be removing a feature that worked fine and many people used... An update should be improving things, not limiting.

Easy solution for those who wish to use MKV files with Premiere Pro:

(brew install ffmpeg)
$ ffmpeg -i video.mkv -map 0 -c:v copy -c:a pcm_s16le video.mkv.mov

You can play around with editing the "-codec:a pcm_s16le" and replacing it with "-codec:a copy", skipping the decoding of the audio stream.

Have just been reading about the benefits of FFV1/PCM codecs and .MKV containers for archiving, and how it has become a favourite for video archiving associations around the world. Then discovered that Adobe just removed support for it! For what reason? Will support be reinstated? If not within Premier Pro will support be added to Encoder?

Thank you Eric Victory, saved me hours with a number of projects where I was recorded in OBS and had been doing voice-over work, etc and just needed a nice intro to them all before publishing before MVK was removed from my version of PP (not sure how I managed to use them up until very recently).

I did as Eric suggested, Duplicate the ImporterMPEG.prm and rename ImporterMKV.prm in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Media Encoder CC 2019\Plug-Ins\Common

My MKVs are now back to normal. Now to quickly complete these projects while I have access!

This is dumb. You need to support the MKV format. It is used for live stream backups over other formats due to it's fault tolerance.

Would love to see MKV format in Premiere Pro! Waiting for videos to convert to an importable format is such a waste of time, resources and energy. Switching away from MKV would be tedious, because if the capture session crashes, all data would be lost.

Just bought a monthly subscription only a couple hours ago and of course, the main file format I enjoy working with and prefer overall is no longer supported! Way to go, Adobe. Once this month is up, I'll probably be canceling my subscription to look elsewhere for other editing software that's actually capable of doing what I need it to do.

Add .mkv video file support. Its a waste of time to convert .mkv to another format before importing it into premiere pro.
