360/VR VIDEO AND PLUGIN PREMIERE PRO

Hi guys. Very Sorry for this long post. I'm part of a team creating a 20 minute VR simulation and a small portion is 360 video shot on a beach.

I'm having humongous problems trying to do very simple stuff with a 360 VR file in PP. It's from a camera called INSTA 360 ONE X. Their customer service is poor. They have a plugin specific to Premiere Pro called INSTA 360 STUDIO (actual plugin in Program Files file is called 'Insta360importer'). It does not work. All I get is a green screen (not the spfx capture kind!). I've tried every setting in PP for VR. I've tried every setting with the plugin software. Just does not work. Strangely, the plugin extension does not appear in the 'extensions' pull down tab inside PP. To be honest - as a side note - Adobe does not really seem to be on the ball with VR/360 stuff as their tech support guy from India admitted as much when I called about this issue. He also promised to send me a support link which never arrived. They should as this technology is not going away anytime soon.

The problem is my deadline is now tomorrow and this has been going on for ten days.

One possible glitch is that Adobe CC does not supply an extension manager anymore. On a previous post back in March, an Adobe expert said to go to a third party ext manager. That linked to this EM plugin (others on the internet suggested this EM as well) which I installed called: PVll Extension Manager. However, that manager does not recognize this Insta 360 plugin file. The actual media file for the footage shot has a proprietary extension '.insv' (At least I think it's proprietary).

BOTTOM LINE: Does Adobe have anyone who has great expertise in VR and is not just guessing? Plugins that will work with 360 VR files??? I think I was able to successfully view one file I downloaded from who knows where but there was no stiching within Adobe PP that I could find. Most cameras now self stitch.

PS FYI, I have been cutting extensively with PP for years

Hey there, BruceK,

Here's what engineering had to say about your issue:

"It sounds like the customer does not have the camera file to Insta360 stitcher application working. They need to use the Insta360 stitcher to export a stitched equirectangular video file which could then be imported into Premiere and used in our VR workflow.

There is no way (that I am aware of) to make the raw camera file work in Premiere."

I hope that helps.

Thanks,
Kevin

Hi Bruce,

I am tech lead for immersive for Adobe's pro audio/video group.

I haven't talked to the folks at Insta for a while.  At launch, the application which integrates directly in Premiere Pro was only for the Insta 360 Pro.  I see that the One X version is currently in beta.  Have you tried running Studio stand-alone to produce the stitch then import the final equirectangular video into Premiere? (Insta360 360 Camera - Insta360, the leader in 360 cameras)

I have found one of the best resources for 360 trouble shooting is the Facebook community.  There are a couple of groups, but the one I find most useful is the 360 Video Professionals group (https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1446468078916774&ref=br_rs).  Max Richter (https://www.facebook.com/max.clusive.9 ), one of Insta's marketing and product specialists, hangs out there, and you can also try to reach him directly.  If you don't have access to Facebook, you can email me at briwilli@adobe.com, describing your problem in detail, and I will forward it to him.

I am sorry you have to deal with this, but hopefully we can help you resolve this quickly.  In the meantime, if you are on Facebook, post there and make certain to @max and also add Hugh Hou and Al Caudullo, they do lots of YouTube tutorials and reviews, so they probably have experience with the camera and the editing workflow.

I just got the One X yesterday. On Insta360's One X page, it mentions a plug-in, but not the Studio:

https://store.insta360.com/product/one_x

"No stitching, no waiting. Just start your edit."  with a graphic that indicates a plug-in.  I wasn't even aware of the Studio until your comment just now.  I'll give it a shot.

Bruce & Brian,

I have a similar problem with the . insv footage. Every time i import the footage the application crashes. On one occasion i managed to reopen the application 3 times by going through the process of allowing PP to recover the crashed project files. Dont know why this happened, guess its just luck or some glitch in the matrix. I have the footage stored on a drive connected via USB.

My current work around is exporting a pro res or .mp4 format file out of media encoder and then dropping that into PP to work with. The pro res still allows me to retain enough information to color correct and such. My last export came out way larger than the .insv file (500mb .inv compared to 1.2GB .mov).

I have downloaded all the plugins from the site, apparently you used to be able to download an extension that was used for one of the pro 360 cams on the site, but that seems to have been discontinued as you now need to have proof of ownership of the camera as they as for a serial number before you can download. See link below.

How to import video Insta360 on premiere pro - YouTube

I also had to install an older version of PP as the gopro reframe plugin is not supported with the new 2019 version (not entirely sure if this has changed)

Let me know if this has changed or if there are any updates to make the 360 workflow easier and less annoying.

Thanks

Nick.

Nick,

I am not familiar with the insv file format.  That sounds like something that's proprietary to Insta.  I would use the Insta studio app, stand-alone, and export to either MP4 or to MOV, then import that footage into Premiere.  The studio app is marked as beta so I wouldn't continue to use it in Premiere if it seems to be unstable.  I will reach out to our friends at Insta to let them know you folks are running into issues.

As far as the reframe plug-in, we verified back in November that the GoPro Fusion Studio (https://shop.gopro.com/softwareandapp/gopro-fusion-studio-app/fusion-studio.html ) plug-ins were working with Premiere 13.0.2.

We have a firm commitment from GoPro that they will continue to support the Fusion Studio application.

Brian, thank you, i am open to sharing an .insv file if you would like to experiment with it for your own or if you would like to carry back your findings to your friends at insta

I am also having issues making the Insta360 plugin work. In my case PP just doesn't seem to recognise it is installed. The insta360importer file appears to have been installed here - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore.

When the splash screen shows after launching PP I briefly see the plugin loading. When I start a new project and drag a insta360 file (.insv) across a PP dialog box appears with the file name in and a message to say the file type isn't supported.

The annoying thing is that the very first time I tried I managed to import the footage and make a video without any issues. It's just stopped working! Any help would be appreciated as I cannot find any reference to this issue anywhere else and Insta360 just keep telling me to reinstall stuff, which isn't working!

Thank you in advance

I can confirm this is STILL the case in the latest version of Insta360 Studio 3.3.4 (with install PP plugin option enabled followed by system reboot). Date of the plugin is 6/4/2019. PP version is 13.1 on Windows 10. Plugin is simply ignored/not loaded. Left a question and replied to it citing this forum on Insta's FB page ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/Insta360OneCommunity/permalink/2212885552134694/  ).

I'm having the same exact problem. The PP plugin does not seem to work, even though it's been installed. It worked the first time I used PP but has since stopped working. Now I get the "file is not supported" error when I try to import 360 videos into PP. Very frustrating.

My One X no-stitch workflow Adobe plug-in stopped working in January this year.
Quite odd since it was working fine before that (just like @sarahc93595876 and @sylert).

I'm in contact with the helpdesk (through the iOS app) and they mentioned that there were more reports coming in. But no solution has reached me yet, anyone has any idea to get it up and running again?

By the way:

the work around by stitching first before editing in Adobe Premiere does work, but it's very time consuming and ends up being lower quality. That's why the plug-in is such a great addition to the One X's 360-workflow.

Same thing happening here. Setting the project to software encoding seems to help significantly, but it still crashes PP a lot, and many times, only a computer restart will suffice. "Frame Substitution Recursion Attempt..."

This does work, but so much extra time to edit and process on the phone, then re-do the lighting etc in adobe. I guess Adobe doesn't want to get involved because they say the issues are with the insta360 plugin and they don't support "3rd arty plugins"

Well... the plugin is actually designed to cut the middle step of using the OneX native software out.

Using the native software works like it should, but the problem is that using it takes time (a lot when in 5.7k mode) and it compresses the video just like Adobe PR does... so you end up with having a lower quality end result which took double the time.

So it's a brilliant move of Insta360 to create the plugin which cuts time and only takes one compression to get to your final video. That's why it would be fantastic if it would work again.

Someone on the Insta360 Facebook page figured it out and I can confirm that it works.

If you installed the GoPro VR plugin, it uses and outdated version of Qt5core.dll, which the Insta 360 plugin also uses, but the current version. So this is why the Insta plug ceases to work.

Either try reinstalling Insta360 Studio 3.3.4 and the PP plugin or, if that doesn’t work, copy Qt5core.dll in the Insta360 install root folder and paste into the root folder of Premiere, overwriting the one that’s there.

Looks like this is still an issue.  I just installed the latest Stitcher for Insta360 Pro 1, and included the Premiere Plugins for PP 2020.  When I click on Extensions>Insta360 Pro Stitcher It opens the window, I select "Stereo (Left Eye on Top)" and then import the folder (with the .ins) file, and it tells me that it's an invalid file format:
PP2020_FileFail.JPG
I also noticed that with 2020, there is no Qt5core.dll file, but a Qt5coreGP.dll file instead:
PP2020_QTCore.JPG

It's the same for 2019.  Anyone found a solution?

My Insta360Pro Importer was working fine until I downloaded the new version of Premier Pro version 14. I then had the invalid format message whilst trying to import files from my Insta360 Pro II. I unistalled the new Premier Pro and went back to using version 13.1.5. It works fine now.

Anyone have luck using the Insta360 files in Premiere? I'm having file import issues and verified the plugin is installed. I would like to use Premieire for my workflow instead of using Insta360's software. The whole point of the plugin was to eliminate the middle step of Insta360 software editing then importing into Premiere.

Ok found the issue and resolved my problem. Not sure if Adobe can reach out to Insta360, or if Insta360 devs check this area. It's basically the plugin location when installing the Insta360 software. I just moved or copied the file "Insta360Importer.prm" to the other Common folder location.

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Premiere Pro 2020\Plug-Ins\Common

Correct

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Common\Plug-ins\7.0\MediaCore

Incorrect

Hope this helps someone besides me! 🙂

I have just stumbled to the same path that you had taken. This works with no extra stitching or compressing files with the Insta software. It must go into the Adobe Premiere plug-ins folder.
