Adding text - how much does it add to the overall size of a video file? If I were to add let's say a line of text every 10 seconds to a 4 minute video file (nothing fancy) would it be normal for the size to go up 300mbs or 1/2 a gig? Something ain't right...

Seems high but you've not given much info other than "nothing fancy". Keyframes are added upon a drastic change in the video frame. You'll add some there for sure when the text comes in and goes out. That's going to be about the change it'll have. If your file renders out at 20GB and you're going up 300MB then it seems fine.. if your file renders out at 1GB and it's up 300MB, that seems like a lot. So... provide more info as to the before and after, frame size, FPS etc...

What are your export settings?
My guess is that the added text is not the issue. You are still exporting x number of minutes of 1920x1080 frames (or whatever). The text may add essentially nothing. But if the origianl file is compressed at 1Mpbs and you export it as 10Mbps, the filesize will get a lot bigger.
