Does the video effect work if you put it directly on the clip rather than the adjustment layer?

What type of effect were you adding to the Adjustment Layer?

Please bear in mind that Adjustment Layers are intended to affect all layers below them. This is particularly handy for color correction that spans multiple adjacent clips.
