Same behaviour in newer versions of Premiere? Or as a "background process"?

If you initiate a manual render of anything, you will have to wait.

That's a highly subjective conclusion, but there are maaaaaaaany improvements to Premiere Pro since CS6 that make it well worth the upgrade to many.
