Auto saves didn't auto save.

This is a very weird problem, and has never happened before.

I have auto saves set to every 2 minutes, because premiere crashes a lot for me. I was working on a project for 2 hours, and I saw the auto save window and bar pop up many times. Then premiere crashed, so I opened up the project again only to see I lost 2 full hours of work. I checked the project file, and the existing auto saves, all of them said last modified: 2 hours ago. I have no idea what happened, and this is very stressful. I can't seem to find others with this problem, and I have no idea why it happened. That was the only sequence opened at the time so it wasn't saving a different sequence or anything. This makes no sense at all.

Do not rely on autosaves,  Autosave in Premiere Pro has never been reliable.Save different versions of a project as you go along at regular intervals to a backup drive different from the drive on which your projects are located.

If your project is corrupt without you knowing so will your auto saves be.

As Bob says: do a Save a Copy on regular intervals.

Make new project and import old one: see how that goes.

Did you do an initial manual save? That seems to trigger the auto save process at project starting.

I'm a longtime computer user that does both Ctrl-S  every little bit and does an iterative save-as every so often continuing on in the iterative version. Just because well, computers being computers.

this is not normal behavior.

do a search for your project name and see if the autosaves are someplace unexpected...    Never seen it never saving.

Also, try changing the autosave location and the autosave interval and see if that makes a difference.  You might try resetting your preferences...

sorry, but this is completely unacceptable for a paid software of this size. 9/10 times I create a million project files and I never get crashes or any problems, but I swear every time this 1/10 cases occurs where I forget to create multiple files along the process it crashes and I'm left with a completely empty project after hours of work!!!! despite seemingly 100 autosaves. Might as well disable this function all along as it is compleeetely useless. This is very frustrating adobe, reliability should be a top priority, not new features and tools. PS: my editing PC is highly specced and does not crash due to low performance.

Neil helps a lot of people here.  and I think he's allowed some slack when he sometimes plays the stern teacher.  And maybe one thing Neil misses here is that because he has a great deal of experience, he may have a subconscious awareness that something's wrong before things go seriously south.  I know I sometimes get a sense that things just aren't behaving properly and do a save as or check my autosave folder to make sure it's saving at the intervals I've set.

Compared to most forums on the internet, we're pretty polite here.  But it couldn't hurt to develop a thicker skin.   I had my knuckles wrapped by an adobe employee recently for what I thought was something was milder than this...

I think what gets frustrating is people complaining about Premiere when many, many people are working without serious issues.  It's not easy to diagnose problems from a distance and people are not always answering all the questions posed by people trying to help.  If you both want to troubleshoot your problems, I'd be happy to start over from a quiet place and see if we can figure out what's going on.  I think it would make sense for each of you to start a new thread.

did either of do a system wide search for your project name?  I've had this happen and when I did a search I found the autosave folder in an unexpected location.  Probably operator error but regardless, I found most of my missing work...  Also, do NOT put your autosave folder on a network or cloud location...

I resolved the problem and am really embarrassed at my tone. I have no business being like that. I really enjoy using premiere pro and my problem this time was part hardware based and part user error I figured out. Apologies, am trying to figure out how to delete my comment. Was not being myself because of lost work. Mea Culpa.

you have no reason to be embarrassed.  Being able to admit when you're wrong is totally admirable and much rarer than it should be.   We've all made these kind of mistakes and there's no reason to delete your post (if you figure out how, let me know.  I'm sure I've got a few I'd rather not be preserved).   In the context of the entire thread, you did fine.  But if you're up to it, please tell us exactly what mistakes you made so others can avoid them.

I used to save every 10 minutes back in 2000 when I was using Windows XP. Now it's 2021. On a mac everything autosaves instantly, 100%, this PP behavior in 2021 in unexcaptable.

First, as this thread has a correct answer and it's not recent, might be a good idea to start a new thread.

Please tell us your system specs: OS version, Premiere version, amount of RAM, Hardware specs including graphics card.  Are you saying Premiere never autosaves?  Have you done a search for the project name to see if it's saving somewhere unexpected?  You might first try resetting your preferences.

Just glad you're working again!

I totally understand frustration and moments of hmmm ... less than perfectly polite thoughts or comments? I think that's a built-in part of any video post-process work I know of. Any type of work, any app ... it's gonna happen.

In fact, it's from being ticked beyond belief a few times over losing things that I FINALLY really truely learned to set up a save routine that a few of the curmudgeonly types that were on here when I started a few years back pushed.

Create a project, save IMMEDIATELY.

Every semi-major step in the process, do an iteritive save-as, continue working in that new project file.

And ... the auto-saves go on a different drive than the project files, in case of drive issues.

After a bit, you do it fast and don't even think about it. And when something happens (that's not an if, but a when, as it will happen!) ... you have a better chance of being able to salvage the job without much wasted time.

Hi, I was directed to this chat page after I directly asked Adobe Chat for help. So I am here now asking you. I, like many thousands before me, assumed that the autosave was actually going to work. I never turned my computer off since the last time I worked on this project. Somehow it is like I dreamed that I had done the work. So of course, Premier Pro doesn't just let your project sit open. It closes after however long. When I opened it and started working again today, I didn't realize I was working on an older saved version until I went to play it back and everthing wasn't there from the last time I had it open. Having looked in different save "bins" the multiple versions are all the same. Is there any other remedy now or did I just lose hours of work? Thanks.

Doctorawd,

Sorry. If you set up Auto Save preferences to save a copy of your Auto Save project to the Creative Cloud, you could check that folder for a potential backup.

The advice moving forward is to test to make sure that your Auto Save function is working OK. On top of that, that the Preference that I mentioned is enabled. At every crucial juncture of the project, it's a good idea to save a back up project manually using the "Save a Copy" function. Hope that helps.

Thanks,
Kevin

sometimes the autosave folder for a project is not where you think it is.  So I'd suggest you do a system wide search for the project name.  Here's an example of a recent project I worked on.  "Kaddish Pr2020.prproj"

If I do a search for "Kaddish Pr2020" I'll see besides some other stuff, files with a name like this

"Kaddish Pr2020-2021-03-15_19-43-30.prproj". This is an autosave which has the project name with the date and time appended to it.

If by some chance there are no autosave versions, take confort in the fact that recreating work you've already done is always much faster than doing it the first time.  (this is the voice of experience speaking).

Due to some major foulups in saving when I started, and getting reamed here (back around 2014) about what, you didn't do any manual saves? .... by several of the more experienced posters here ... I got started doing a Ctrl-S just every so often without even thinking about it.

Why do manual saves, save a copy and/or save-as iteratively?

Think out the auto-save process. You have it set for say five minutes and keep twenty before it over-writes them. Start working. That means that in a couple hours, you'll be overwriting previous auto-saves.

Now ... at some point, a bit of corruption or error or whatever creeps into a sequence or file database within PrPro, something odd. But it's not on the sequence you're buried in working away. And you keep working.

Then you go to work on that first sequence you worked on this morning, and ... it's hosed. Go to your auto-saves. And even back to the oldest auto-save you've got left, it's ... hosed.

Which means ... you're hosed.

Autosave cannot save you from everything, period.

And any major step forward, it's a good idea to either save-a-copy or do a save-as to an iterative name, and then continue working in the new iteration. You've then got a solid history of that project you can always get back to, with good working parts.

By the time you do it a few times, you don't even have to think anymore, just do. Takes a few seconds per time. And will save you hours, including maybe your neck when you would have otherwise missed a deadline.

I'll be honest here. I don't care how hard is to build a proper software but as long as it charges you MONEY it HAS TO WORK! And what has it done, it dumped my 8h of work straight into thrash.. I saw autosave pop up window 100s of times and it DID NOT save anything, so what is the purpose of having the opetion which is not reliable or not working at all? It's really the WORST software possible to work with, I don't say this in general because everything else is great but the reliability is WORST ever, the Auto save doesn't work, and SAVE AS also saves exactly N O T H I N G!!!!! So what do I have to do? Save files with my own hands into the hard disk using magic stick? Really disappointing...

Wouldn't recommend this to anyone.
