I am going to have a few old VHS tapes converted to a newer format I can work with. This
is after attempting to import. an MPG file and ending up with pixilated video.
The video file plays fine on WMP. An earlier attempt at updating my Radeon 6700
failed to produce - in fact, it caused quite a stir, and I needed to restore to get back
online.
There is a local shop that advertises "starting at $12" - and they produce DVDs. I havefound
that most of my old DVDs with VOB files will import very well,
and provide perfect editing capability.
Not quite sure what to ask for, I would guess an MP4 format? Maybe that's the default.

If you can get ProRes, that would be the best choice. I transfered a 3/4" tape recently and had it delievered in ProRes 720x486. Otherwise, they may not do that, so h.264 would be the standard.
