Capture window randomly keeps freezing

I'm finally getting around to digitizing a million old VHS tapes of various things (get your mind out of the gutter!) and Premiere is updated to latest version, Blackmagic Intensity 4k card has latest drivers but the capture window keeps freezing at seemingly random intervals. Sometimes it freezes at 5 seconds, sometimes 20 minutes in, never at the same point so it's not something on the tape or machine. I have changed the capture location, I've tried it on Premiere 2019 but it still keeps happening! I don't recall ever having this problem before. Any ideas?

Here's a Sandra report for those who are into that kind of thing.

This ended up being an issue of using a VCR without time base correction, which is stupid and frustrating because I do not recall ever having this problem in the past despite using the same VCR! Must be a thing with software updates and capture funcionality being changed or something. Who knows, but I nabbed a VCR with TBC off Ebay and am capturing with no errors now. FYI!

I'm wondering if the vhs tapes and deck could be the problem.  vhs tapes tend to stretch and the oxide can flake off over time...

This can present issues...  back in the day, you'd run it thru a timebasecorrector to "stabilize" it.

The tapes play fine on to a TV so there's no issue there. From research I think it might be needing a time base corrector but it's irritating because I catprued a bunch of different tapes last year and didn't have one glitch.

just cause they play fine, doesn't mean that they're up to spec for capture... and just because different tapes worked fine doesn't mean you won't have issues with these...

but wondering if this might be a blackmagic problem.

Do you have one of the tapes that captured without issue last year that you can try again...

Also, you might try fastforwarding and rewinding a tape before trying to capture it... and if possible, you might try a different vhs deck.  At one time, I had a multistandard vhs deck that clearly had some kind of timebasecorrection built in...   Of course, sometimes a vhs tape was so out of spec that although there was a video signal coming out of the deck, it looked horrible...
