Choppy footage

Trying to edit 5k footage and the video is INSANELY choppy. I made proxies, which helped a bit, but it's a pretty annoying task and things still move slow at times.

My question is this -- I have a smaller mac with only about 100GB of stotage (20GB left). Will choppiness like that always be an issue on a smaller laptop? I even remember when buying it (wasn't editing videos at the time) the clerk said it might present problems for video editing/production.

Any help would be great -- thanks!
