Existing opacity mask disappearing when I nest clip

I'm trying to warp stabilise my clips using an opacity mask for the first time.
Once I've covered my subject and hit 'nest' the mask disappears from the Effect Controls panel.
If I warp stabilise before nesting it doesn't seem to be registering the mask and warp stabilises the entirety of the frame.
If I warp stabilise after nesting the mask is hard burned into the frame and I can't toggle it off.

What step am I missing? Thanks in advance ☺️
