Help with simple reveal/hide animation on a lower third

I'm sure that I'm just overlooking something simple here, but for the life of me, I can not figure this out.

I've made plenty of text animations where I use a crop to reveal text by sliding it in.  I'm trying to do the same thing to a Mogrt lower third animation file, but the crop effect isn't working the same way.  I have this lower third text animation that I'd like to add a crop to and then make it "slide" out or go behind a crop half way through it's animation, but when I add a crop to it, the crop doesn't work the same as when I add a crop to a text layer.  After adding the crop, I try moving the lower third and it's just linked with the crop instead of going behind the crop.  Does that make sense?  I'm sure there's an easy way to do this, but I just can't seem to figure out the best way to get this done.  Any help is much appreciated!
