In Premiere Pro, Upscale then Denoise ... OR Denoise then Upscale ?

Hey all,

The clips are standard DV, 4:3 24p, 720x480.    Going from that to 1080p.

Using regular PPro upscale and Neat Video.

The results so far are quite good.  I've upscaled the clips and have been adding the denoiser (then a pinch of sharpen) because I think that the noise comes out more after you upscale and I can apply the denoiser as needed.

Is there a rule to go by?

Should I be denoising the clip in it's natural 4:3 frame first, then upscale?   I thought I see more noise after upscaling, so I know how much desoiser to add.

Thought are appreciated.

Thank you,

Letty

I like the way you are doing it - Upscaling first and then denoising.

This way you can better see the results of Denoise (and sharpening).

However, I would also experiment. Test one shot both ways and see if you can see any difference.

Good Luck.

I agree with Steve about testing both ways.

It is possible that the upscaling process is actually adding more noise to the image due to pixel interpolation. When you upscale you have to make new pixels where there were none before, and if an area has noise, then new noisy pixels are created.

But that may be moot because Neat Video will probably just remove the new noisy pixels right along with the old ones.

Go with whatever method gives acceptable results and makes your editing life easier. 🙂
