Incredibly Laggy Premier Pro 2021 - Macbook Pro 16" 32GB

Hi all,

I'm having an issue where (only occasionally) my Premier Pro gets incredibly laggy, to the point that I just can't edit anything.

I was just editing 4K footage, no problem, but have swapped to a 1080p project and it is so so so laggy. I have it on 1/8 playback quality, using mercury GPU acceleration, i've got 32GB of ram and dedicated 27GB to premier.

I've tried closing Premier, closing all other programs, resetting my Mac, and still unusable.

Any suggestions?

HI there,

I have 2019 16" MBP and it's not laggy at all. Can you share more details on your setup? Too many variables at play to narrow down the issue.

  • Which version of MacOS
  • Which version of Premiere
  • GPU and amount of VRAM
  • Hard drive size, and how much space is remaining
  • Location of media cache (default location or separate drive)
  • Location of media files you're editing (internal or external drive)
  • Codec and bitrate of your media files. 4K or 1080 isn't specific enough -- are they ProRes, H.264, MXF...? And what camera are they from?
  • Any other external devices plugged in -- monitor, dock, other drives, etc.?

Try to set the "Default Input" to "No Input" in the Preferences > Audio Hardware and see if it helps
