Trying to use the liner wipe to create a soft edged wipe but the second clip becomes visible underneath the first clip for the entire duration of the transition and i get strange vertical and horizontal lines on the left and upper part of the screen.  Insanely frustrating for something that should be so simple. Tried rebooting, tried reinstalling premiere an nothing.

Remove the linear wipe, and apply instead an opacity mask. Add keyframes to it and animate as desired. It takes a minute to learn the first time, you'll love it in the long run.
